Larry Doby signed a contract to play baseball for the Cleveland Indians a few weeks after Jackie Robinson “broke the color barrier.” By his team’s outcomes (baseball American League pennants in ‘48 and ‘54) and his personal stats (9-time all-star), Mr. Doby was a wonderful player. Like Mr. Robinson, he had to take a lot of abuse. Like Frank Robinson, who proceeded him in the order of first people to manage professional baseball, he also did a lot to show that -ism ain’t right. That these guys had the dignity to tolerate what was thrown at them makes me feel humble.
