Tough beak

pileated damage to treeMan, those pileated woodpeckers can peck. This view of a tree trunk shows the holes that a bird or birds have opened on it. The upper most of these was at least 12 cm tall.

There have been multiple instances of pileateds at our feeders the last 10 days. (We’ve had them on the railing before.) Also, we’ve seen birds repeatedly across the branch, through the still-bare woods, at the edge of the meadow, about 80 meters from the porch. The damaged tree trunk is about another 40 meters farther away.

It would be fun to have a nesting pair in the neighborhood. We remember having a nesting pair a few years ago in roughly the same area where we’ve seen birds this year.
