Vashti McCollum

Vashti Cromwell McCollum was born on this day in 1912. She spoke out about the imposition of religious studies in her son’s school in Champaign, IL (US) and her objection went all the way to the US Supreme Court in McCollum v. Board of Education. The case was decided 8 March 1948 and it marked an important reiteration of the separation between religion and government. Thanks to Ms. McCollum, who died just over a year ago, we’re all freer.
