Adbusters & MTV

Adbusters, which has wonderful TV ads for TV Turn Off Week has plenty of other good messages to pass along to folks, including long-standing contributions to Buy Nothing Day. Although it’s old news now, it seems that MTV, once again, refused to run Adbuster’s commercial about decelerating consumerism.

Action update: MTV, the channel that markets itself to hip youth, has decreed that our Buy Nothing Day public service spot “goes further than we are willing to accept on our channels”. Gangsta rap and sexualized, semi-naked school girls are okay, but apparently not a burping pig talking about consumption. If you object to this sort of corporate censorship, why not send them a message now?

The folks at Adbusters deserve lots of credit for their efforts. According to a Wikipedia entry, MTV is not the only broadcast network that has refused to air the ads.
