IWD 8 March

iwd_4.gifEvery 8 March is celebrated by many as International Women’s Day. I’m glad to share the day with this effort. This year apparently marks the 100th anniversary of the observance of IWD.

International Women’s Day has been observed since in the early 1900’s, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

  1. Correction: I see from the organization’s Web site that the formal centenary is 2011. This year (2008) marks 100 years since a specific march: “15,000 women marched through New York City in 1908 demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.”
