Thanks to Pat, we got to see Steve Earle and Allison Moorer at the Paramount Theater last night. They put on an very fine show that covered lots of ground, time, and material. The set started surprisingly close to 8 and occupied all of the time that they probably were permitted, ending right at 11. The list included an extensive mix of older (“Billy Austin,” “Goodbye”), newer songs (“City of Immigrants”), and plenty of social commentary (e.g., “The Devil’s Right Hand”). For some of the songs, Neil McDonald joined Earle to mix in beats and even scratches. Lots and lots of excellent guitar work. The four-song encore included “Little Rock and Roller,” “Jerusalem,” and (last) “Copperhead Road.” Well worth it.
