6 or fewer degrees

Does anyone know of a study—a serious one, now—of incestuous relationships among blogs? Who refers to whom? How many blogrolls does one have to visit before one comes back around to the original? How many posts on one blog refer to another blog that has posts that refer to the first blog?

I know that Facebook, Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn, and etc. are based on this human relationship, but I’m thinking about the blog relationship.

Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person he or she knows and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is an average of six “steps” away from each person on Earth.

Sure, XFN does this in part, but what are the data? While one’s at it, perhaps a donation is in order?

  1. the reactions and rankings reflected in Technorati pretty much provide the information I think you’re looking for.

  2. Hey, Marijean. Thanks for dropping a comment. Technorati does provide interesting connections. Still, I’d like to see the means and standard deviations, etc. Does the average number of steps differ by focus of the blog?
