Perriello’s up

The count has been stable since late afternoon yesterday (the last change was reported about 3:48 PM 5 November), and it shows Mr. Perriello ahead by 31 out of 315,055 votes. Of course, this margin is within the range that triggers a recount, and it is within the range (0.5%) that requires local governments to bear the costs of the recount. The losing candidate (Mr. Goode, in this case) has 10 days to request a recount, but the calendar for those 10 days does not begin until after the election results have been certified by the Virginia State Board of Elections 24 November 2008.

This document summarizes Virginia’s rules for recounts for the November 2008 elections.
