Yikes! On 10 October 2010 there are no events scheduled in C’ville to support efforts to promote activities that address global warming! Harrisonburg and Lexington are taking care of business and we are not? Paste expression of surprise and disbelief onto my face.
The folks over at 350.org are calling these events “Global Work Parties.” As they say, they put the
Emphasis on both ‘work’ and ‘party’. In Auckland, New Zealand, they’re having a giant bike fix-up day, to get every bicycle in the city back on the road. In the Maldives, they’re putting up solar panels on the President’s office. In Kampala, Uganda, they’re going to plant thousands of trees, and in Bolivia they’re installing solar stoves for a massive carbon neutral picnic.
Yes, it’s a lot of those tree-hugging sorts of things. Plant a little tree and give it a little hug, or plant a lot of trees and give each one a little hug. Do something solar (but no hugging the sun). Promote community and organic gardening and farming. Ride bikes and encourage local governments to make policies that support safe bicycle commuting. Sponsor neighborhood projects that help folks insulate leaky spots around windows. Work with a litter removal team.
